Fun Physics Questions

Hey all!

I figured to spark your interest in physics, I would throw you all a little physics "scavenger hunt".

These questions are for fun, so please answer at least one. The answers are cool, trust me! Some questions toward the end will focus on Physics 112.

1) What is the coldest temperature achieved in a laboratory?

2) What is the hottest temperature achieved in a laboratory?

3) What is the other form of Newton's Second Law of Motion? Hint: Mass is not constant.

4) What is the exact speed of light in a vacuum?

5) What is the most abundant element in the universe?

6) What is a quark?

7) What is the ether and what theory came from disproving its existence?

8) What is an electric charge? How many type of charge are there?

9) What is magnetism?

10) What is the mass of an electron?

Good luck and I hope to see all ten questions answered!!

  2. 1) I found that 450 pico-kelvin above zero is the lowest temperature achieved in a lab.
2)70 million degrees Celsius was created at Princeton.

  3. 6) A quark is an elementary particle and a fundamental unit of matter. Quarks combined to make hadrons which are the stable units in protons and neutrons.

    9) Magnetism is a physical phenomenon produced by the motion of electric charge, resulting in attractive and repulsive forces between objects.

    10) The mass on an electron is 9.1x10^-31 kg.

  4. 8) An electric charge is a physical property of an object or matter that causes it to experience an attraction or repulsion when in the presence of another matter. There are positive and negative electrical charges.

Ether is the rarefied element formerly believed to fill the upper regions of space. The Lorentz ether theory came from disproving its existence.

  12. sorry, that should have said 10^-31. i would hope an electron wouldn't have a mass that big!

  13. I had to answer this qustion because I remember reading this in our physics book:

    What is a quark?
Protons annd neutrons are composed of six particles called quarks (up, down, strange, charm, bottom, top)The up, charm and top quarks carry a charge equal to +2/3 that of the proton. The down, strange and bottom quarks each carry a charge equal to -1/3 the proton charge. The proton has two up quarks and one down quark, giving it a positive 1 charge. The neutron has two down quarks and one up quark with a charge of zero.

  17. 1) What is the coldest temperature achieved in a laboratory?
-500 picokelvin., done by MIT scientists
    2) What is the hottest temperature achieved in a laboratory?
    - 4 trillion degrees celcius
    3) What is the other form of Newton's Second Law of Motion? Hint: Mass is not constant.
    -Momentum
    4) What is the exact speed of light in a vacuum?
    - 299,792,458 m/s
    5) What is the most abundant element in the universe?
    -Hydrogen
    6) What is a quark?
-Basic building blocks of protons and neutrons. They are elementary particles meaning they cannot be broken down into other particles.
    7) What is the ether and what theory came from disproving its existence?
-Ether was the medium for electromagnetic wave propogation. It was said to be undetectable, and was theorized to be involved with space. Only problem with an undetectable thing is that it cannot be official proved or disproved. However; theory of relativity did a good job disproving its existence.
    8) What is an electric charge? How many type of charge are there?
    - It is a physical property of matter. Like charges of the same sign repel each other, while opposite charges attract. Can be negative or positive, and is always conserved- never created or destroyed.
    9) What is magnetism?
    - Magnetism causes attraction or repulsion of objects due to their electric charges.
    10) What is the mass of an electron?
    - 9.1x10^-31 kg
    -Hannah Roddy
